CheapAss Inc. Presents The Music Mix for 2007
By an Amazon.com customer
Begin to HopeBegin to Hope by Regina Spektor
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.31
"Fidelity" is the song I have dedicated to the memory of Tower Records, my former employer. The song is fantastic, describing a love that may not have been.
OneOne by Dierdre
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $0.30
Dierdre's solo album is infused with electronic sensibility, a voice to knock your socks off, and the beautiful song "One Of Your Smiles". It is a reprise of "More Than The Ocean", being a slower, more heartfelt version of the upbeat dance-oriented version. A good idea of the type of talent Dierdre has.
Tracking Treasure DownTracking Treasure Down by Gabriel & Dresden
Buy used from: $13.95
"Tracking Treasure Down" is almost a guilty pleasure. Surely this much pop in a trance song is a sin, somehow, right? Molly Bancroft provides this amazing song with just the right amount of beautiful vocals, and nothing beats the simple clapping. A definite winner.
Louder NowLouder Now by Taking Back Sunday
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.92
Taking Back Sunday are forging ahead into the new year with Louder Now, bringing rock back during a time when we desperately need it. "Miami" is a perfect testament to this forward movement, and after you heart it, you'll only be able to agree.
Monkey Business (Dig)Monkey Business (Dig) by Black Eyed Peas
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $1.61
The first track of BEP's latest album, Monkey Business, is a fast-paced "shake your bottom" crowd-killer that NEVER fails to put a smile on my face. "Pump It" is just a great song!
InterceptIntercept by Bent
Buy used from: $1.99
Intercept! is a return to form for Bent, who took a more ethereal departure with 2005's Ariels. "Waiting For You" is an engaging and fast-paced dance number with scratchy and compelling male vocals that demands attention.
Waiting for ClearanceWaiting for Clearance by Freelance Hellraiser
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $1.92
More than just mash-ups, the Freelance Hellraiser provides us with a dance-pop album worthy of some serious credit. Let the slow buildup from feeling ballad to boogie-tune that is "Something You Do To Me" be your introduction.
VeinsVeins by Charlotte Martin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.48
Charlotte Martin may be beginning to creep out of Tori Amos' shadow. Her willingness to embrace electronica in her heartfelt musical compositions is great. "Under the Gravel Skies" is a worthy addition to any fan's collection.
Goodnight & GoGoodnight & Go by Imogen Heap
Buy used from: $34.99
Imogen Heap provides us with the best song of her career in a b-side to the immensely popular "Say Goodnight And Go". "Speeding Cars" is a moving masterpiece of vocal prowess, masterful production, and creative songwriting. Amazing.
See You AgainSee You Again by Jenny Bliss
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $1.00
Jenny Bliss, with the help of Robbins Entertainment, provides us with a catchy and undeniable vocal trance gem. Her voice is surprisingly easy to listen to, and I can only hope for more of her.
Change It AllChange It All by Goapele
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.94
Goapele's new album is mostly downtempo soul, but the funkiness of "Love Me Right" is refreshing and naughty at the same time. This is the track that made me realize that pop is universal.
Hello StrangerHello Stranger by Hello Stranger
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.44
Hello Stranger bring us a fantastic blend of rock, pop, and beautiful songwriting. "Her In These Lights" is a perfect example of this fusion. Just wait until you hear her sing, "I see her in these lights as the city ignites."
BoxBox by Mellowdrone
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.90
Bringing simmering rage and calm, funky rock back to the scene is Mellowdrone. "Fashionably Uninvited" is the closest song to the Deftones, with enough of a departure to be obviously a different band. "Excuse me, is my rant taking too long?" the singer intones, shortly before the scenery explodes with the chorus.
CivilianCivilian by Boy Kill Boy
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.01
Often the point of my music mixes is to bring to the front songs that people may not be hearing. Because of this, I tend to ignore radio singles. Sometimes, like in the case of "Suzie", you just can't ignore the pull a track has. "Suzie" may be the best the album has to offer, but there's only one way to find out.
Eyes OpenEyes Open by Snow Patrol
Buy new: $11.68 / Used from: $2.83
"Hands Open" had me smitten from first listen. I had to buy this album because of it. The singer's voice is emphatic, and the song screams Rock in a way nothing has in a good while. Love it.
The Open DoorThe Open Door by Evanescence
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $3.99
The new album from Evanescence provided me with trouble. I knew I wanted to use something on the mix, but I couldn't figure out which song. They were all too...bland. But the choice was clear when Amy Lee whispered, then practically screamed, "For once in my life I think it'd be nice to lose control just once."
Do Me Wrong 2Do Me Wrong 2 by Mel Blatt
Buy used from: $5.67
"My Everything" is a dark slice of electro-pop that no one would exactly expect from All Saint singer Melanie Blatt. But she provides it, full of funk and determination.
I Watch YouI Watch You by Lee (Ft Mim) Cabrera
This song is one of the best house songs I've heard come out of Europe in a long time, and with male vocals to boot! The Ian Carey mix is fantastic, but it's the original that made it onto my annual.
Who's Your DaddyWho's Your Daddy by Benny Benassi
Buy used from: $89.66
Wow! Is this the most scandalous song the man's ever done or what? Just read my review of this single to get my full impression.
All Things to All PeopleAll Things to All People by Carpark North
Buy used from: $12.84
Carpark North are going to be huge if they keep releasing albums like this and songs like "Human". I was introduced to the song by it's fantastic video. It is hard, driving, and melodic. A perfect combo.
Live It Out (Dig)Live It Out (Dig) by Metric
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.60
"I fought the war but the war won" is a superb lyric from this great group. "Monster Hospital" is what the rock of 2007 should sound like. Political songs can be fun without the droning sound of Green Day.
Make Up the BreakdownMake Up the Breakdown by Hot Hot Heat
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.01
"No, Not Now" is not a new song. But it is fresh and a welcome addition to my mix. It's entrancing for a rock song and I only hope to hear more like this in the next year.
New Comes & Goes (Dig)New Comes & Goes (Dig) by Oranger
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
The title track from Oranger's album is fun, funky, and altogether just an enjoyable song. The little keyboard bits only make it that much cooler.
Sing-Sing and ISing-Sing and I by Sing-Sing
Buy used from: $4.55
Sing-Sing, made up of a former member of the group Lush, deliver us a song that is just that. Lush. "Come Sing Me A Song" is super-fun sunny pop with a sing-along, breezy feel.
Chaotic ResolveChaotic Resolve by Plumb
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.01
Plumb's album, Chaotic Resolve, was a revelation for 2006. Amy Lee looks up to this woman. And who wouldn't? "Sleep" is an underdog tune from the album, overlooked by most, but not by me. This song is dreamy, pun intended. A great mellow rock tune.
Sam's TownSam's Town by Killers
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $1.93
This album didn't offer a lot for my mix. Most of the songs were too..."out there", even for me. Then I relistened to "Read My Mind", and my mind was changed. It's a great song, and while not nearly as good as most of Hot Fuss, still represents an alley of music I think should be revisited more often.
RobynRobyn by Robyn
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $7.00
"Handle Me" is the crux of my mix this year. While the original is from 2005, the song is immensely fresh. It offers a nice balance between beauty and harshness. Her voice is one that is often passed over, but keep an eye out for a UK re-release of her self-titled album, and the subsequent conquering of the world.
Scale (Dig)Scale (Dig) by Herbert
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.93
Producer Herbert gives us a fantastic and catchy beat with "Harmonise", sung by long-time collaborator Dani Siciliano. I really can't explain it if you don't know his style, but watch out for that beat. Almost as hot as Roisin Murphy's "Ramalama".
In OrbitIn Orbit by September
Buy used from: $9.70
September is Petra Marklund, and we are thankful for her. Her sunny album In Orbit features all sorts of fresh lyrics, vocals, beats, and rhythms. "It Doesn't Matter" is one such combo attack, and if you survive, your tush will be shaking all over.
LuckyLucky by Lucky Twice
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $5.88
Every good mix of music should have...no, NEEDS a helping of cheese. Without the cheese in the music industry, we couldn't have the serious songs. Sometimes the cheese just happens to be the best part, as shown here in the delicious "Lucky", by Lucky Twice.
Stoned in LoveStoned in Love by Chicane
Buy used from: $8.94
Haha. Thank you Tom Jones and Chicane for one of THE BEST songs of 2006! This is the perfect summer drive song, with hypnotic beats and Tom Jones magnificent voice. The best he's ever sounded!
Take Me Back to Your House, Pt. 2Take Me Back to Your House, Pt. 2 by Basement Jaxx
Buy used from: $11.51
"Take Me Back To Your House" is a fun and refreshing song, with the country twang and ferocious club beat. But what happens when you change things up a bit? The Balti Skool Mix shows us that, with dub-like vocals (just the background ones, for the most part) and a completely whacked-out, yet undeniable street beat.
Silent Alarm RemixedSilent Alarm Remixed by Bloc Party
Buy new: $15.68 / Used from: $1.99
The Engineers provide one of the most gorgeous "remixes" I've ever heard of a track, transforming "Blue Light" into a ethereal trip into a sad man's subconscious. Perfect for when you're feeling bad.
Some Day SoonSome Day Soon by Kristian Leontiou
Buy used from: $1.69
Kristian was removed from my 2006 mix, but his fresh sound and amazing take on heartfelt pop melodies earned him a spot on 2007. "Hanging" is such a song. It was obviously good enough to make me come back to it over a year later.
Mistaken IdentityMistaken Identity by Delta Goodrem
Buy used from: $14.00
"Last Night On Earth" from Ms. Goodrem sounds a lot like "Limits of Our Love" from Charlotte Martin, but Delta has such an awe-inspiring voice that pure vocal presence alone puts this one on top. Make sure to find this somehow.
Step Outside YourselfStep Outside Yourself by Over It
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $0.61
Virginia rock group Over It have done a good job emulating many different styles of rock that have played on local rock station DC 101. "The Energy" uses the same blues root that Big Wreck used on their first album. "The Energy" is a fantastic rock-pop tune that you need to hear.
A to the BA to the B by Infernal
Buy used from: $8.00
This group is great! "A to the B" is the delightful follow-up to international superhit "From Paris to Berlin", but I think it's better. It's got a great melody, and being given dating advice in a song is pretty damn fun.
In the RedIn the Red by Tina Dico
Buy new: $12.00 / Used from: $1.94
The year of Zero 7 vocalists brought solo albums from Sia, Mozez, Jose Gonzales, and this luscious vocalist, Tina Dico. "Use Me" is a slow, mellow tune that encourages someone not to beat themselves up, but to use her to make themselves feel better. It's dark and beautiful.
Mating GameMating Game by Bitter:Sweet
Buy used from: $7.95
This group has been getting a lot of attention since Grey's Anatomy. But I won't be predictable and take any of the obvious songs. Instead, I'll use "Moving Forward", a sultry slice of deep electronica that depicts the struggle of everyday life.
