Jazz legends with string orchestras: the great, the good, the smooth
By an Amazon.com customer
Winter MoonWinter Moon by Art Pepper
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.38
This is seriously beautiful music. To me: the Number 1. If you've never heard Art Pepper play before you are in for a treat. If you have heard him before, but haven't got this CD, then you are missing out on one of his greatest recordings. The string arrangements are very fine too, something that cannot be said for all the selections below.
Charlie Parker with Strings: The Master TakesCharlie Parker with Strings: The Master Takes by Charlie Parker
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.60
One of the first, and one of the best of all "with strings" recordings. Parker was a superb jazz improviser, flying at great speeds around any type of background arrangement. Here he sticks more "in-tune", playing a top notch sax and "pretty notes" (his phrases) against not-too-bad strings arrangements. I loved this music as soon as I heard it. I still love it.
Clifford Brown With StringsClifford Brown With Strings by Clifford Brown
Buy new: $12.83 / Used from: $7.44
Clifford Brown is a stella trumpet player. Great phrasing and sound. Great ideas. Everything he recorded is worth listening to. Personally, I find the orchestrations a little too smooth and pedestrian at times, but you can't fault Clifford, he's on top form.
Music for Loving - Ben Webster with StringsMusic for Loving - Ben Webster with Strings by Ben Webster
Buy new: $20.87 / Used from: $9.10
You may think that Ben Webster's sultry and breathless tone would be perfect for strings and you'd be right! My only quibble with this 2-CD set is that there is too much silky smoochy music to take in one sitting. Its almost too perfect, like a beautiful model with no soul. Definitely one to buy, but taken in smaller doses.
FocusFocus by Stan Getz
Buy new: $14.34 / Used from: $9.37
Famous, highly regarded set, by one of the most lyrical and best sounding musicians of all. Best to read other people's reviews. I just don't like this as much as I hoped to...but that's my loss.
Cool Velvet/Voices [2 on 1]Cool Velvet/Voices [2 on 1] by Stan Getz
Buy used from: $7.44
Its all a matter of personal opinion. I think that Getz's Cool Velvet is better than Focus, and a more engaging listen. Getz could really play... ballards...and faster numbers...anything. Even Coltrane was in awe of Getz's sound and execution.
Motions & Emotions (Reis)Motions & Emotions (Reis) by Oscar Peterson
Buy used from: $22.36
Oscar Peterson with strings, and a rather relaxing record, including the much loved Wave. The string arrangements are first rate.
Desmond BlueDesmond Blue by Paul Desmond
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.50
Paul Desmond had an alto sax tone as smooth as honey, and could play with real grit as well. The opening 2 tracks are wonderful. One or two of the following arrangements may not grab your interest as much as they perhaps should. But anything by Desmond is classy.
Menuhin & Grappelli Play Gershwin, Berlin, Kern, etc.Menuhin & Grappelli Play Gershwin, Berlin, Kern, etc.
Buy used from: $7.95
Fastinating combination with great tunes. A jazz violin maestro and a classical violin maestro. One improvizing, the other reading. It swings surprising well, and is a very satisfying listen all the way through....but then I'm in awe of Grappelli's playing, and amused at how he up-stages his much more famous/richer colleague.
Violin JazzViolin Jazz by Joe Venuti
Buy new: $13.58 / Used from: $5.97
Fun, outrageous and very hot - from the golden age of hot jazz.
FusionFusion by Wes Montgomery
Buy new: $9.39 / Used from: $4.49
Wes' swinging playing against the string backdrop is a sure-fire success. Strange title, though, given that Wes' real fusion was with modern pop music, not back to strings.
Willow Weep for Me (Spec Packaging)Willow Weep for Me (Spec Packaging) by Wes Montgomery
Buy new: $11.76 / Used from: $3.99
A curiousity. It actually has wind and brass orchestra added later onto the brilliant (no other word for it) Smokin at the Half Note club date. A surprise for buyers (before the date was re-released in its orginal format), but not a really nasty one, as its all done in the best possible taste.
The Best of the Song BooksThe Best of the Song Books by Ella Fitzgerald
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.30
I've got the complete Songbooks, and this best of, and to be frank, I spend more time with the best of. It has Ella singing along with a mix of string orchestras and brass bands, all of them perfectly in tune and tempo.
Classic SinatraClassic Sinatra by Frank Sinatra
Buy new: $7.94 / Used from: $1.00
If nothing else, then this CD gets on my list because of "One for my baby". The rest is classic stuff; some stunning singing, with some very cool, jazzy arrangements.
Moment to MomentMoment to Moment by Roy Hargrove
Buy used from: $4.56
"You've got to hear Roy Hargrove". So I did...and I can see why so many people like his horn playing, and this CD. There's far more chance you'll like this CD than not, but if you're one of the "nots" then that's not a surprise either. Verdict: good and smooth, but try before buying.
Verve Jazz Masters 50Verve Jazz Masters 50 by Sonny Stitt
Buy used from: $9.98
This is compilation includes the lovely "Time after time" with strings. Naturally, it sounds Charlie Parker-like. And for added enjoyment the CD has Stitt playing "Just Friends" and "Laura" - without strings. Whereas Bird recorded these tunes with strings.
