Customer Reviews
Not working
The first one we tried the thermostat did not work and just heated the water up to over 100 degrees. We went back and got another which did the same thing. Poor quality control. We cannot recommend this brand.
Big Ol' De-icer
I was hoping this de-icer would be a bit smaller. Here's why:
Typical bird baths should be fairly shallow or the birds will not bathe but simply drink from them. I realize it's rare that a bird will bathe in the winter, but it does happen.
The problems I have with this device are the size and the temperature.
I have a pond de-icer that keeps the water at exactly 34 degrees, this device I believe is much warmer and causes a lot of evaporation. As well, the cord should really be much longer to keep the connection further away from the water. The size is a little large and I think it could be easily engineered to be smaller. Because of the size, it barely gets below the surface of the water in my bird bath and I would imagine the same would happen in most shallow bird baths.
I don't mind maintaining the level of the water daily but if I have to leave for a few days, the water totally evaporates from the bird bath due to it being too warm. That's a problem. Also, there's not an auto-shut-off feature with this device if the water level dips below the norm. I think for the same cost, a more efficient and smaller device could be designed.
Bird Bath Heater
This 150 watt bird bath heater is perfect if you want winter birds to visit your yard. It keeps a large bird bath completely open in the harshest weather.
